Why I Stand as an Advocate

By Arthur Bendolph, Jr.

There are moments in life that change you forever. Some arrive with warning, some without. Mine came the day I heard the words no man ever wants to hear: “You have prostate cancer.”

I’ve faced fear before. As a Gulf War veteran, I learned to push through discomfort, uncertainty, and danger. But this… this was different. This battle wasn’t on foreign soil—it was inside my own body. And it carried the weight of generations. My grandfather, my father, and my uncle had all lost their lives to this disease. I grew up watching prostate cancer steal the men I loved most. And now, I was next in line.

When that reality hit me, it wasn’t just a diagnosis. It was a mirror held up to my mortality—and my purpose.

I remember sitting alone after receiving the news. It felt like a dark cloud had settled over everything in my life. The air was heavier. Time moved slower. But somewhere in the middle of the fear rose something stronger: resolve. A fire I didn’t ask for, but one that refused to go out.

I decided right then that silence was no longer an option.

I urged my brothers and every man in my family to get tested. When two of my brothers were also diagnosed, my mission became even more urgent. This fight wasn’t about me anymore. It was about breaking a deadly cycle. It was about rewriting a story that had taken too many of our men too soon. It was about making sure no one else carried this burden alone.

During my treatment—proton therapy, a choice I am grateful for—I felt a calling growing louder inside me. I survived something that could’ve taken me out. Not so I could walk away quietly, but so I could walk back into the world stronger, louder, and committed to change.

I realized that men, especially in the African American community, are suffering in silence. Too many are afraid to talk about their health. Too many are lost because they never learned that early detection isn’t just important—it saves lives.

I couldn’t let that continue.

That’s how ACCCOLPH and DeFeat Cancer® were born—not out of ambition, but out of necessity. This work is my promise to my family, to my brothers in uniform, to my community, and to every man who feels fear he can’t put into words.

I stand as an advocate because I’ve seen what silence can cost.
I stand as an advocate because I know what awareness can save.
I stand as an advocate because every man deserves a fighting chance—no matter his background, no matter his story.

Most importantly, I stand as an advocate because I believe that pain doesn’t have to be wasted. It can be repurposed. It can be transformed. It can light the way for someone else.

My journey taught me that hope is not passive. Hope is action. And advocacy is hope in motion.

As long as God gives me breath, I will use my story, my voice, and my mission to help men step out of the shadows of fear and into the light of early detection, knowledge, and community.

This is why I stand.
This is why I fight.
This is why I advocate.
